July 6, 2003 (Sunday)—Venice

This morning we loaded onto our vaporetto and headed into Venice to sing at San Marco. We warmed up in the courtyard just outside the basilica, then changed into the choir vestments. Inside, sitting in the northeast gallery, we got to see the mosaics up close. While it wasn't our best singing recently, the effect downstairs was perfect. Afterwards, we went for lunch, then to the glass factory at Murano. We did some shopping, and then got some gelato. On the way back to the vaporetto we saw a gondola regatta. We got the scenic trip back to central Venice, boats everywhere, people parking on a sandbar to set up chairs and umbrellas. It was another hot day, so people were spending their afternoon outside.
We returned to Venice, then back to Mestre for dinner and an early bedtime after tour journals and postcards.

This kind of shop makes the adults very nervous. But nothing was broken, and boys foudn a lot of gifts to bring home, well padded.

The local fountains have potable water, perfect for refilling PBA water bottles.
