July 5, 2003 (Saturday)—Venice

We had an early start, so were still tired from traveling. We got onto the vaporetto to go to Venice. We had a tour of the Doge's Palace in the morning, and Piazza San Marco, where we will sing tomorrow. We sat down for a nice lunch next to one of the canals. After lunch, we broke into chaperone groups for some shopping time. About 2:30, we reconvened for a rehearsal. During rehearsal, it was clear some of the boys were still very tired, so we arranged for a rest period, after which the boys changed and we went to dinner. After dinner, we headed to the Santa Maria dei Miracoli where we had our first concert in Italy. Particularly considering how tired everybody was, it was a great concert for an enthusiastic audience. Marcia climbed up a ladder through a door in the ceiling to get to the organ.
The concert was fairly late (9pm), so we boarded the vaporetto immediately afterwards and headed back to Mestre.

Pam found a local who told us where the locals go to lunch. We mostly had pasta. We looked for a Chinese restaurant, but had to settle for Italian food. The boys were very well-behaved, a direct payoff of weekly Troubador dinners!

After lunch we had the opportunity to get some gelato.

There are lots of pigeons in Piazza San Marco.
