PBA Celebrates 20th Anniversary 2018-2019!

The GRAMMY winning Pacific Boychoir Academy (PBA) announces that 2018-2019 is their 20th anniversary of bringing exceptional music performance and education to the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in Oakland in 1998, PBA features a robust after-school choir program as well as a day school for boys offering grades 3-8. Over the years, thousands of young artists have enjoyed world-class performance opportunities and a choral music experience that emphasizes musical excellence and character education through gentlemanly arts.

Founded by Kevin Fox, alumni of the American Boychoir School, Pacific Boychoir is the last independant boychoir school in the United States not affiliated with a religious institution. PBA carries on a long-standing tradition of boys’ choral music. For twenty years PBA has served a diverse community of young men, promoting cooperation and global citizenship.
“It still amazes me what PBA has been able to accomplish in such a short time. I’m excited to see what the new generation of leaders, choristers, and families does with the next 20 years!”
-  Kevin Fox, Artistic Director Emeritus

PBA started off it’s anniversary season with two collaborative performances with the San Francisco Symphony, led by Michael Tilson Thomas, alongside the Symphony Chorus and the SF Girls’ Chorus. Audiences marveled at the boys’ rendition of Mahler’s  Symphony No. 3  and Stravinsky’s  Persephóne.

“I’ve so enjoyed our collaborations over the years and have come to rely on the PBA for its musical excellence. You should know that what you founded and nurtured will make a lasting impact for years tocome.” - Michael Tilson Thomas, San Francisco Symphony

Momentum has already picked up with an unprecedented performance of the National Anthem for the back-to-back National Champions , the Golden State Warriors! Audiences cheered from the sidelines to see boys lined up in our custom Pacific Boychoir/Warriors commemorative T-shirts. Season ticket holders gushed that this was “easily, the best National Anthem!”

This December, PBA will hold their 19th annual Harmonies of the Season concert at First Congregational Church in Berkeley. Featuring  Pacific Boychoir's Troubador and Changed Voice ensembles, along with special vignettes by elite high school a cappella ensemble, Continuum.  PBA will perform holiday choral favorites. Accompanied by brass and organ, this is  PBA's premiere concert of the season  - not to be missed.  Please see our website for additional holiday concerts, including a collaboration with the California Symphony.

Our season will crescendo next spring with our 20th Anniversary Concert and Gala at Mills College in Oakland. The theme for the event is  Around the World in Twenty Years   and will feature music performed by PBA across the globe. The event will be held on Saturday, April 27, and will begin with a pre-concert reception and silent auction. The concert will be a retrospective of classical and world music, as well as American spirituals, performed by our elite SATB choir and joined by PBA alumni. This repertoire has been heard in various locations throughout the world, now shared here with our Bay Area audiences.

Crowning the evening of April 27th will be our 20th Anniversary Gala, featuring notable guests from the Bay Area music community. Mingle and dine with our staff and guests at this fundraising event; hear from PBA alumni and honorees about the impact PBA has had on our choristers and our community. Resources generated from the event will enable the choirs to expand community engagement partnerships, further build program diversity, increase scholarship opportunities, provide greater professional development for teachers, and enhance facilities that will foster greater program depth and community reach!

Join us in celebrating 20 years of musical excellence in Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area! Season tickets are available on our website, including early bird Gala packages. Many more concerts and public appearances are scheduled for this anniversary season; learn more about them online. Follow us on social media to look back at our last 20 years and look forward to the future!
